The Coast Institute of Technology (CIT), led by Principal Stephen Ngome, expresses gratitude to the African Development Bank for enabling the institution to establish Sapphire Hotel. With the Bank’s support, CIT constructed an electrical and electronic engineering laboratory in 2018. This state-of-the-art facility facilitates the training of students in various disciplines, including ICT, general hotel maintenance, hospital facility management, and telecommunication engineering. By equipping students with the necessary technical skills, CIT ensures they are well-prepared for the evolving needs of the electrical and electronics industry.

 

Technical Education Empowering Graduates and Catalyzing Economic Growth

Since the completion of the first phase of the TVET improvement project in 2015, spearheaded by the African Development Bank, Aldai TTI has made significant strides. The institute has introduced 13 new courses, graduating 234 students. Out of these graduates, 170 have become self-employed, while 34 continue pursuing advanced training. Jonah Koech, a student who obtained a Certificate in Building Technology, testifies to the impact of the African Development Bank’s support. He credits the availability of equipment and quality training for empowering graduates like himself to expand their services in fields such as electrical engineering, carpentry, and brick-making.

Wilfred Kurgat, who graduated from ATTI three years ago, serves as a prime example of the institute’s success in transforming lives. Kurgat established an electronics workshop where he repairs televisions, watches, phones, and other electronic devices. The knowledge and skills acquired through ATTI have empowered Kurgat to generate income, support his family, and become self-reliant. Furthermore, ATTI has opened a soil-testing laboratory, providing technical expertise to agronomists and helping improve farm yields. In the second phase of financing for TVETs, Aldai TTI has constructed an ICT complex, effectively doubling the enrollment capacity for ICT courses. Hostels and houses have emerged to provide accommodation to both students and workers, further stimulating economic growth. Entrepreneur Wilfred Langat seized the opportunity by investing in the property business, enabling the institute to offer boarding facilities to approximately 162 students. The demand for technical education in Kenya has been steadily increasing, with more school leavers opting for TVET programs due to the availability of jobs in various technical fields. Kenya’s Director of Technical Education, Tom Mulati, emphasizes the changing perception of TVET education. This shift is evident in the rising number of students—6,667 this year—who chose mid-level TVET education over traditional university paths.
